You may recall that May, June, and half of July had me busy creating a painting for my little art group’s nonprofit art exhibition and auction on August 7 and 8. And you may remember that it was the first time I painted anything in fifteen years.
I’m glad I took the leap of faith and picked up my brushes and palette again.
For 29 years, my little group has created scholarships, arts education programs, and exhibitions. From the beginning, we provided platforms for emerging artists to gain visibility, networked with patrons, and built direct relationships with similar organizations. Recently, one of those relationships resulted in the Create For Change auction on August 8.
It was an interesting and unique event for me because it took place outdoors. I’m used to the indoor ones with long rows of tables displaying a plethora of things slated for auction, so being in the middle of a wildlife park was a pleasant change. I love the outdoors (sans mosquitos, of course), so I had an enjoyable time surrounded by the flora and occasional fauna of birds and squirrels.
My painting was the fourth item auctioned, and it was involved in a small bidding war, which confirmed that I had painted something more valuable than I thought. So, yes. A confirmed professional artist can still have doubts about their art.
The winning bidder was happy with her purchase, which raised money for the organization I sponsored (see my last post) and my little group, Corry Artists’ Guild.
As I sit back and reflect, I’m proud of what the group has done for the community in which it sits. As we continue our mission, we are already planning a historic landscape restoration project, more fundraising for our nonprofit groups, supporting arts education, and fostering art preservation in our community.
