I’ll be showing five pieces of my artwork at the Corry Artists’ Guild “Ripples and Reflections” art show, May 8 and 9.
This will be my first time showing in a Guild show after a long hiatus from the organization and sabbatical from painting.
I chose to enter old artwork to represent the “Reflections” part of the show since returning to the Guild has made me feel “born again”—a rediscovery of my old self.
The two small paintings from 1986 (below) show my early attempts to grow as an artist. In the beach scene, I found myself drawing with the paint—using my brushes like pencils. In the deer painting done a few months later, I began by sketching the whitetail buck with watercolor pencils, then abandoning them for quick strokes of paint. I kept the background loose and sketchy by applying color washes, building from light to dark.
The two larger paintings from 1987 (below) are from my sophomore year at college. Both are acrylic paintings on stretched canvas and show my struggles and successes at learning to control the medium. In the self-portrait, I found myself drawing with the brush again. In the deer painting, I loosened my brushstrokes and applied the paint impasto in the rocks—a new technique for me.
The fifth and final painting is a copy of a Camille Pissarro painting that I painted in oil in 2002. This was an exercise to use very loose brushstrokes in my art. It led me to use all palette and painting knives in future work, which allowed me a freedom of expression that my earlier work didn’t have.

Thanks for joining me during this busy time of preparing for the Corry Artists’ Guild “Ripples and Reflections” art show.
Until next time, peace and love.
