The months of May and June and half of July had me busy painting. Just one painting.
It was the first time I painted anything in fifteen years.
It began as an assignment after I volunteered to do a painting for the Corry Artists’ Guild’s “Create For Change” program, a nonprofit art exhibition and auction scheduled for August 7 and 8.
All volunteers chose a local nonprofit organization to represent. I chose the Foundation for Sustainable Forests in my locale as my nonprofit partner. The Foundation’s mission to protect forested land and support forest livelihoods resonated with me deeply as a wildlife artist.
My finished oil painting on canvas, “Fueling,” shown below, highlights the gentle impact of using horses to harvest timber compared to heavy machinery. The title refers to the horses pausing to “fuel up” during their workday.
After a fifteen-year hiatus from painting, taking part in this project was a joy and a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with the beauty of creating art for a meaningful cause.
It was also a re-learning experience.
I began painting in the early 1980s with watercolor and gouache paints, then moved to acrylics in 1986. I was self-taught until I began college that year and graduated with a BA degree in art in 1990. By then, I painted with oil paints and became well-known for my woodland wildlife and rural country landscape paintings. I also taught many drawing and painting classes for children and adults, and in 1997, co-founded the Corry Artists’ Guild. I painted until 2011, then stopped to concentrate on a writing career.
