There has been A LOT of snowfall where I live, so I’ve been snowed in during the past few days. While taking down some of my Christmas decorations, this time of isolation has given me a chance to go through boxes of stuff I have saved over the years. One of them contained some of my poetry.
So, for my first post of the new year, I’m presenting Remembering.
Interestingly enough, as I look ahead, I look back to see how far I’ve come. Below is a poem I wrote when I was 35, a time that seems like no more than a decade ago. Enjoy.
Do you remember how we crept along fences young together
stumbling through to the other side of eternity
never thinking we would ever become middle-aged?
Do you recall homesick high-school weeks making us feel gentle
like days of a last breathless uncertain chord played—
a warm rich memory from an old woman’s concert piano?
Do you remember solos?
Where did they go?
Too much, too many are stored within the unraveling fabric of a vanishing time.
Solid silver lively youths are gone
and the silvery seniors of tomorrow stare back at us in mirrors and photographs.
(I hope tomorrow I will still be able to write intelligent verse.)
Will either of us ever be really that old
or wholly separated as we move into our later years
to ever forget how to remember?
Clutch with me, then, this snapshot now
and save it for our tomorrows
lest we do forget.
Until my next post, peace and love to all.
