Girl on a Train, Poem 2024-0831

Below is a poem I wrote in 1977, a year after I met the girl featured in the poem. I kept it to myself until April 6, 2016, when I published it on my Art ~ Writing ~ Life blog. Enjoy.

I awoke this morning to voices on the wind,
Echoes of past,
present,
and future—
Modern times when I was living the year of the cat.

The blonde girl from Finland smiled at me
when I missed my southbound train to Rome;
We were homesick for home,
So she chased away our blues with her northern songs.

She sang like sugar on my tongue.

She sweetened our cappuccino time
under an umbrella on an alabaster beach,
Turned the moment into a carefree romance,
And danced like an angel in a bright night
when the stars and the moon never stop shining.

By morning, our trains were on time.
We waved our last goodbyes,
Never to meet again
Until I awoke this morning to voices on my mind,
Echoes of when the blonde girl from Finland first smiled at me and said hello.

Until my next post, peace and love.
