We’re at the end of September and I see I’m falling short of republishing my Ridgewood Chronicles series of books. As spring became summer, my schedule for writing diminished. No matter how I tried to force it, the mood wasn’t there.
By autumn, I knew I’d fallen far behind with finishing the second book of the series on time. With October less than twenty-four hours away, I’m wondering if I’ll finish it by December as planned? Probably not. But stranger things have happened.
“Night of the Hell Hounds and Other Stories” is the first book in the series. You can buy it at Amazon in ebook and paperback. Here’s the ebook link: www.amazon.com/dp/B00AY2K1H6.
An interesting aside from hitting that brick wall over the summer was meeting a fellow author who also self-publishes. The topic of pricing came up and we discussed pricing our books at a fair price. He showed me a formula that some self-pub authors in the U.S. use. They price their books by words published. In one example, which piqued my interest, was the idea of charging a dollar for every 10,000 words published, and ten cents for every 1,000. Thus, a 10,800-word book would cost $1.80, and a hefty 90,700-word book would cost $9.70.
It’s an interesting formula and one I may pursue in the future.
Meanwhile, it’s time to get back to writing that book, after I get this old house ready for winter.
Until next time, peace and love.

Steve how do you promote your books? Do you buy Facebook ads or Google ads?

Hi Max, I don’t use ads yet. There’s a popular agreement among the self-published authors I’ve talked to that ads are costly and aren’t as effective as word of mouth and posting at social media sites. I use WordPress and Facebook for that. I used to use LinkedIn and Twitter, but they’re not as popular today. I also used YouTube and still have my channel, but I haven’t done anything there in years. Many of the authors I know have begun using TikTok, but I haven’t. I plan to spend time increasing promotions after I finish this series and publish my next book under my penname, which I’ll have to promote separately. It’s a slow process and takes a lot of time.

Hey Steve…sorry I got sidetracked comepletely!
I guess social media would be the place to go. Iv’e never really checked out the prices in Facebook in running ads but I bet they are high. TikTok is the big thing but I’ve only visited it once in a while.

I find the pricing formulas interesting. May the book gods be with you during your republishing and we see you on the best sellers list.

Hi Joseph, Thanks. I’m hoping the book gods are as kind as my art gods were. 🙂

I use Twitter ( sorry just can’t call it X. Just makes me think of an X-rated site) Twitter has a great writing and reading community.

Hi Paula, Thanks. I’ll check it out. I left it in 2015, so maybe it’s better now (except for its new name). 🙂

The secret is to use the right hashtags. Pop #writerslift is Twitter search engine. Add your book to a writers lift and then make sure you share other people’s book. It’s called exchanging a lift for a lift. Add #writingcommunity or #readingcommunity to your post to help get your post to the right people

Thanks. I’ll save this info and give it a go. There are many secrets at these sites that I’m still learning.
