My mom died 18 years ago on Wednesday, June 8, after complications from surgery. She was 66.
When she died, I wrote the following poem for her funeral.
In Memory of My Mom
In this lamentful family moment
When heads of the living are slumped forward,
Tears flowing,
Tongues completing tender prayers — our final goodbyes,
Our eyes — so accustomed to observing no more than mortal time—
Now gaze back before these lonesome hours together
To when her sweet spirit departed this life and flew with the angels to her mansion on far,
High upon a hill of bounteous buttercups:
Golden treasures like the ones our Father walked through on the Mount of Olives.
She ascended unto a place of dazzling gardens of lilies and tulips,
Around gentle brook,
Across tender lake,
To her final home
Where everlasting light burns in her open windows,
Curtains forever drawn wide to let in the bouquet of Heaven
Filled with savory sights and sweet sounds where God is the artist and composer.
She looks out from her doorway and smiles there,
Happy to be home,
Yet watching and waiting over us during our sudden hush
As we embrace and remember
Caring mother,
Dear sister,
Sweet aunt,
Adoring grandmother,
Kind friend.
Thanks for reading.

I have a grandson whose graduation from high school is tonight. We had breakfast to celebrate, and I commemorated my mom. He said he wishes he could have known her. I wish the same. But…
Sorry about your mom. I’m sure she lives on in your memories, just as my mom lives on in mine.

Oh yes she does…thanks for that Steve. My dad passed in August of 2015 and my mom on Feb 14, 2006 and they had been divorced for years…it was a rough time.

My parents divorced during the summer after my junior year of high school. It was a rough and surreal time, especially adjusting to her new boyfriend soon after. That’s when I grew my hair and got into heavy music. He hated both, so we didn’t get along well during my “rebellious” senior year. My mom did a good job keeping his temper in check.

Mine got divorced when I was around 5 or 6… but yea I remember the boyfriend who…didn’t like me and dad’s girlfriend who did.
It really sucked but it was better than the fighting they were doing together.

My parents bickered, usually over money, but they never got physical, which I’m glad. They separated, then divorced a year later. I worked with my dad at the town’s radio station and the local Minute Man gas station, so we saw a lot of each other during those years. He remarried later and his new wife liked me. It was nice not to hear my parents bicker anymore.

Thank you, Mark. The poem poured from me that day. After 18 years, I can still feel the emotions during that time.
